Connect Europe-GSMA Position paper on GDPR simplification
GDPR is a cornerstone of the EU digital framework as well as a global standard
Connect Europe and the GSMA welcome European Commission’s focus on Simplification as an opportunity to enhance European Competitiveness, help EU companies to innovate and preserve the rights of EU citizens.
A well-designed, fit-for-purpose simplification of the GDPR would enhance legal certainty, reduce administrative burden, and help to responsibly innovate without lowering the high level of data protection in the EU.
GDPR is a cornerstone of the EU digital framework as well as a global standard. While GDPR core principles remain solid and future-proof, there are areas for improvement as its practical implementation has been revealed to be overly complex and sets out unnecessarily burdensome requirements.
The accumulated experience after the GDPR entering into application for seven years presents an opportunity to refine how the GDPR should be applied and its effectiveness be strengthened, without compromising its foundational goals, and without a broader reopening of the Act.
